What I have learnt from other artist websites..

From looking at other peoples websites, but from a different perspective I have been able to see strengths and weaknesses of the way the website works.

From the beginning I have always thought that the easier the website to navigate the better and I still think this, you don’t want people to get bored and confused, going round in circles, so to keep it simple is the most important thing.

You also need a website that compliments what you are showing, you don’t want anything garish or brightly coloured if your work if the opposite. I also think that you need to be careful how you word your information, you don’t want anything to complicated or anything going off the subject.

From all this I hope I have created a website that satisfies all the objectives and is complimentary of my work.

Evaluation

From creating my website I have learnt that you have to be organised, so that you can plan what information is relevant and where it is going to go. I also realised you have to know who your target audience is before you start writing, it is useless writing things that are not going to be relevant to the people looking at your site.

I have also learnt that you need to think about what theme you are going to use, it needs to be complimentary of the images and text you are showing, you don’t want people to be distracted from what you are trying to show or tell them.

I think the language used on your website also needs to be fitting to what the site is about, as I am a student with an art background, I have tried to keep it friendly and up beat but I have also tried to explain my concepts and ideas thoroughly.

I think I need to develop my website further by constantly updating it, with new information and new ideas, as an artist everything is always changing and I think the website needs to be the same. I have tried hard to make my website organised, concise and easy to understand, I think this is apparent when looking at the site and I just need to keep working on it.

I have recently produced a piece of work that I presented in uni, its a sample of where I want to go with my work, so I thought this would be useful to include on my website, as people who are interested in my current work, can see where I am, and where I am heading in the future.

Brighton Body Casting

Although this website is aimed at an audience that is going to be paying for this mans work, the website looks cheap and quite amateur.

He has used a bright pink background which is quite distracting and takes attention away from what the artists is trying to do, which is make people want to buy his work.

He sells his work for alot of money, so maybe he should make the website  a bit more high end, making it look professional and adult, instead of garish and fluorescent.

I found Word press quite confusing, I kept pressing the wrong buttons and having to go about things again and again. I found it difficult to name images, and give them a title on my website, I kept putting the information in the wrong sections.

Here is a diagram of how I have set out my website, I think it is quite self explanatory and simple to direct yourself around. There are four main pages which you can click on which all have information on and a explanation. Then there are sub pages which drop down from the first three main pages which will direct you to information and sections concerning the title of the main page.

Who is my audience??

As an art student I’m always looking at other peoples blogs and websites, I have made my website aimed at the same kind if people as myself! It’s an art based website that people with an arts background can look at! It’s friendly and welcoming but still professional in the way it is presented! I think that people will be able to see that it’s a website that is art based from the word go, so there is no confusion!

What were my aims for this website?

I wanted my website to be clear, concise, visually pleasing and easy to navigate. I think I have accomplished this, I have found certain aspects of creating the website difficult at times, simple things made me confused, for example I didn’t know how to put titles to my art works and other artists work, through trial and error I worked it out, but things like that which are simple I found quite annoying at times.

David Cushway

David Cushways’ website is quite sophisticated, its minimalistic but has quirky factors which I haven’t seen when looking at artists websites.

He has included drop down boxes which give u an option to choose a specific theme/topic of choice to look at which then takes you to that piece of work, and has a description and a gallery on the side of the page. It makes the website flow, its quite nice to guide yourself around it. Then there is another drop down box on the main page where you can select current work or later work.

There is also sub pages where you can click CV and statement and also there is a means of contact to David Cushway which i think is helpful.

What I do think is important on a website it to have a means of contact with the viewer if the person looking at your website is confused or needs to know more information i think it is vital that you have a contact page, giving details on how to get hold of you may it be phone, email or fax.
